English Touring Opera present

The Emperor of Atlantis

by Viktor Ullmann

Fri 26 October 2012

Info

7.30pm *

The Emperor of Atlantis (Der Kaiser von Atlantis) was written when Viktor Ullmann (composer) and Peter Kien (writer) were prisoners at the Terezin concentration camp during World War II, and has since been acclaimed as an extraordinary testament of wit and humanity in the face of barbarity.  James Conway's new production will be accompanied by a staging of J.S. Bach's sublime cantata, Christ lag in Todes Banden.
Sung in English translation.

* The Emperor of Atlantis / Christ lag in Todes Banden will start at 8.15pm. The performance will be preceded at 7.30pm by Towards an Unknown Port, a 10-minute cycle of songs written by Helen Chadwick in response to the opera and performed by a local amateur choir.  This will be followed by a pre-show talk to give further background and context to the issues raised in the opera. Your ticket also entitles you to attend these extra events.
