Promised End is a new opera consisting of 24 short scenes from Shakespeare’s King Lear, set to music by leading British composer, Alexander Goehr. The scenes, selected by the composer and scholar Sir Frank Kermode, have been distilled and re-ordered to present one of the most powerful renditions of the play yet.

Ryan Wigglesworth conducts the award-winning, contemporary ensemble: Aurora Orchestra, with a cast including Roderick Earle as the besieged King, and Nigel Robson as his vassal, Gloucester.

A comic opera which created theatrical history, The Duenna was for 75 years the nation’s favourite and most successful opera, amassing the fortunes of Covent Garden.

A scandalous elopement between Sheridan (author of The School for Scandal) and soprano Elizabeth Linley provided the story for which her father and brother (“the English Mozart”) provided the music. Donna Louisa flees, with the help of her duenna (Nuala Willis), rather than be forced by her father (Richard Suart) to marry a wealthy man.
