Northcott Production & Technical Team Job Descriptions

WELCOME! And thank you for your interest in Exeter Northcott Theatre and joining the Production & Technical team

About the Northcott

The Northcott Theatre has been attracting audiences in Exeter and the South West to the very best UK and international performing arts for over fifty years. Before the closure of theatres in March 2020 due to Covid-19, our programme featured a mix of home-grown productions and top-quality touring drama, music, dance, comedy etc. We are now looking forward to rebuilding our offer with a combination of work we produce and present in our theatre space/s and a range of projects and participation activities with artists, communities and young people in Devon.

The Northcott has been working with partners over the last couple of years to explore options for the future development of the city-centre Barnfield Theatre and, coming out of that work, has now taken over the management of the venue, with its two performances spaces (c280 seats & c60 seats). Whilst brilliantly located and much-loved, the Barnfield Theatre undoubtedly needs investment to bring the spaces and facilities back up to standard, and there is definitely scope to expand the range of activities happening in the building and the audiences that it reaches. Our intention, in taking the venue over, is initially to safeguard it (both in terms of its business model and the building and its facilities), to start the process of building up its programme, and then to start fundraising for further capital developments. We’re seeing this as an important and exciting part of how we expand our role within the cultural life of Exeter over the next few years.

Diversity & Inclusion

There continues to be a significant lack of diversity across the arts, with a pressing need to provide progression routes for talented people from backgrounds that are under-represented. Exeter Northcott Theatre is committed to playing its part in addressing this by putting inclusion at the heart of our recruitment processes, finding new ways to share the power and resources we have at our disposal, and fostering a working culture that is welcoming for all our team. We actively encourage people with different backgrounds to join us and positively impact our teams and working practice. We are particularly keen to receive applications from people of African and Caribbean heritage, people of South Asian, East Asian and South East Asian Heritage, D/deaf and disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, or those experiencing barriers due to their socio-economic background.

We are open to considering job shares or part-time work.

Opportunities within the Northcott Production & Technical Team

We are currently looking for skilled and enthusiastic theatre technicians to join our Production & Technical team, which is led by the Production Manager. The team structure includes Technical Managers, Senior Technicians and Technicians and we are open to appointing at the appropriate level depending on your experience.

Collectively, the team are responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of the theatre’s performance spaces and associated spaces/activities, with a particular focus on maintaining a safe working environment, achieving the highest possible artistic/technical standards for both touring and in-house productions, and maintaining stage and electrical equipment in good working order.

We are keen to recruit a Technical Manager for the Barnfield Theatre who has a particular interest in developing a smaller venue. They will take the lead on working with visiting companies and developing the technical facilities and systems at the Barnfield Theatre.

We also have a vacancy for at least one Senior Technician specialising in lighting to be based at the Northcott Theatre.

In addition, we’d like to hear from Technicians of any experience level to work across both venues as part of the team supporting all types of performance and events. Technicians should have some previous experience or training, but additional training will be provided.

For any queries relating to your application please contact our Production Manager, Elaine Faulkner: e.faulkner@exeter.ac.uk

Whilst likely to have specific areas of interest and expertise, we expect our Technicians to work across all areas within the Production & Technical Department when required, and across all venues that the Northcott operates in.
